A Conversation Can Be a Starting Point

Sometimes you know something has been weighing on you, even if it is difficult to put into words. At Ann Mitchell Psychologist, I offer counselling on the Gold Coast for people wanting to talk about anxiety, low mood, stress or other personal concerns. I will begin with what feels most relevant to you and take the time to understand the circumstances around it.

Relationships and family life can also affect how things feel day to day. Alongside my Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology), I hold a Master of Mental Health (Family Therapy) and have worked as a Clinical family therapist, so my background in family therapy can be useful when that wider context matters. To talk with me about a counselling appointment, reach out on (07) 5527 6585.

What Counselling May Cover

There is no set list of things you need to bring to counselling. We can begin with whatever feels most relevant to you, which may include:

  • Depression-related concerns & circumstances
  • Anxiety, worry & situations connected with it
  • Stress, conflict & personal pressures
  • Life changes, relationships & family context

What Happens at the First Counselling Appointment

Your first appointment is a chance for me to hear what has been happening and understand what you would like help with. I may ask about relevant background or circumstances so we can clarify what to focus on. Sessions are usually around 50–60 minutes.

If further appointments seem appropriate, I will talk that through with you rather than assuming a fixed number of sessions from the outset.

Medicare services are available, and private health fund rebates may be available depending on your circumstances. Please ask me about eligibility and arrangements when you get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

We can start with whatever feels most important for you to talk about. I will listen to what has been happening and may ask about your current circumstances, relevant background or relationships so I can understand the bigger picture. You do not need to arrive with everything worked out. The first appointment is also a chance for us to discuss what you would like to focus on and whether further counselling feels appropriate.

You might consider counselling if anxiety, low mood or related concerns are prompting you to seek professional support. You do not need to decide for yourself whether your experience fits a particular diagnosis before getting in touch. In our first conversation, you can tell me what has been happening and how it has been affecting you. I can then discuss whether counselling is an appropriate service for what you would like to address.

My sessions are generally around 50–60 minutes. I do not set the same number of appointments for everyone because people come to counselling with different concerns and circumstances. After our first meeting, I can talk with you about whether further sessions may be appropriate and what sort of frequency makes sense. We can also review the focus as we go rather than locking you into a fixed program from the beginning.

Yes. If relationships or family circumstances are connected with what you are experiencing, you are welcome to bring them into the conversation. My postgraduate training in family therapy helps me consider those wider relationships alongside individual concerns where relevant. Depending on what is happening, we can discuss whether individual counselling remains the most suitable format or whether a family therapy appointment may be more appropriate.
