Starting With What Has Brought You Here

You might seek a psychology appointment because something has changed, a concern has been building for some time or you simply want professional input into what you are experiencing. At Ann Mitchell Psychologist, I provide psychology on the Gold Coast from my Mermaid Beach practice and work directly with you from the first conversation onward.

I will take time to understand what has prompted the appointment and the wider circumstances that may be relevant, drawing on the grounding of my Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology). When relationship or family factors are part of the picture, my postgraduate family therapy training can also inform how I understand the context. Get in touch on (07) 5527 6585 if you would like to discuss an appointment.

Reasons for Seeking a Psychology Appointment

People come to see me for many different reasons. Depending on your circumstances, we might discuss:

  • Mental health concerns & relevant background
  • Stress, conflict & changing circumstances
  • Relationships & family context
  • Personal or professional concerns

From Initial Discussion to Further Appointments

Your first consultation gives us time to talk about why you have come in and any background that may be relevant. If you have a referral, I can review that as part of the conversation.

I will then discuss what I think the appropriate next steps may be and whether further appointments make sense.

Sessions are generally around 50–60 minutes, with fees and possible rebate arrangements discussed before booking. Medicare services are available and private health fund rebates may be available. Please ask me about eligibility and arrangements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your first appointment is a chance to tell me what has been happening and what you would like to talk about. I may ask about relevant background, current circumstances or relationships so I can understand the context rather than looking at one issue in isolation. You do not need to know exactly what kind of support you need before you arrive. Once I understand your concerns, I can discuss what I think an appropriate next step may be.

Not necessarily. Referral requirements depend on how you are accessing psychology services and whether you are hoping to claim a Medicare rebate. Private health fund rebates can also vary between policies. If you are unsure, you can ask me about the appointment arrangements before booking. I can explain what information I need from you, but you should confirm your own eligibility for any rebate rather than assuming a particular referral or funding pathway applies.

My psychology appointments are generally around 50–60 minutes. I do not use one standard schedule for everyone because the reason for attending and each person's circumstances can be different. After the first consultation, I can discuss whether further appointments may be appropriate and how often we might meet. We can review that over time as needed, so you are not expected to commit to a fixed number of sessions before we have even met.

Yes, when those relationships are relevant to what is happening for you. I also have postgraduate training in family therapy, so I can take that wider context into account alongside individual psychological concerns. That does not mean every psychology appointment becomes family therapy. If the main reason you are seeking an appointment relates to a couple or family relationship, my dedicated family therapy service may be a better place to begin.
