Space to Talk About Trauma, Grief and Loss

Experiences of trauma, abuse, grief and loss can be deeply personal, and there is no expectation that you arrive ready to explain everything at once. Through Ann Mitchell Psychologist, I provide trauma counselling on the Gold Coast and give you space to begin with what you feel able to discuss.

I will listen to what has brought you in and consider the circumstances surrounding it without assuming that everyone experiences trauma or grief in the same way. Where family or relationship dynamics are closely connected, my background as a Clinical family therapist and my family therapy training can also inform our conversations. To ask about an appointment, give me a call on (07) 5527 6585.

Trauma & Grief

Areas That May Be Discussed

What we talk about will depend on your circumstances and the reason you have come to see me. This may include:

  • Trauma & abuse experiences relevant to your concerns
  • PTSD as part of what you would like to discuss
  • Grief, bereavement & loss
  • Relationship & family circumstances connected with what is happening

How Trauma and Grief Consultations Are Approached

I use the first appointment to get to know what has brought you in, hear the background you feel is relevant and understand what you would like to focus on.

From there, I can talk with you about what further appointments might look like. Sessions are generally around 50–60 minutes.

If you have questions about referrals, fees or possible rebates, you can raise these before booking. Medicare services are available, and private health fund rebates may be available. Please ask me about eligibility and arrangements.

Frequently Asked Questions

I will begin by listening to what has brought you in and what you feel comfortable discussing. You do not need to tell your whole story at once or arrive with everything organised. I may ask questions about relevant background and current circumstances so I can understand the context of your concerns. The first appointment gives us a chance to talk about what you would like to focus on and what further sessions, if any, might involve.

Yes. You can come to see me about grief, bereavement or other experiences of loss when you would like professional support. Grief can look different from one person to another, so I will not assume how you should be feeling or what the experience means for you. We can talk about your circumstances, what has changed and what feels most important to discuss, then consider whether you would like to arrange further appointments.

No. People come with different experiences, histories and reasons for seeking support, so I do not use one fixed sequence for every person. I will first get to know what has brought you to the appointment and what you would like help with. From there, I can discuss an approach that reflects the information you have shared. I cannot predict a particular outcome in advance, but I can explain the proposed focus before we continue.

They can be when they are relevant to what you are experiencing. My postgraduate family therapy training means I can consider relationship and family context alongside individual concerns without assuming it is central to every situation. If your main concern is a family, couple or separation issue rather than trauma or grief itself, you may also want to read about my family therapy service before deciding where to start.
